Course Description
Building on the success of last year's programme, the 2024 China Week Summer School returns for its second year, offering an interdisciplinary exploration of the multifaceted relationship between China and Nepal with a strong emphasis on sustainability. This programme delves into China’s role in the green transition, examining its impact from a global perspective, with a specific focus on Nepal. Over the course of five days, participants will explore various sub-themes, including energy transition, society, politics, economics, technology, education, business, infrastructure, geopolitical relations, and cross-cultural understanding. This enriched summer school experience features guest lecturers from various relevant fields who will share their expert insights. Each session is designed to be interactive, encouraging participants to share their opinions and ask questions throughout the lectures.
Course Objectives:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary dynamics of Nepal-China relations, focusing on sustainable bilateral projects and initiatives.
- Examine China's rise in the global education sector and its impact on future academic collaborations.
- Enhance cultural understanding and awareness through interactive sessions, discussions, and cultural activities.
- Analyse the influence of media on Nepal-China relations and understand the geopolitical context of China's interactions with Nepal and South Asia.
- Explore China's contributions to sustainability and green technology, and assess how Nepal can leverage these advancements for its own sustainable development.

- Class Schedule: 5 days
- Total Hours: 20 hours
- Eligibility: Current undergraduate and postgraduate students, prospective postgraduate students, and any interested researchers or keen watchers in China.

- Overview of foreign students education in China
- Presentation by Dr Rupesh Regmi titled "From Silk Road to Silicon Valley: How Chinese Universities are Shaping the Future of Global Innovation?"
- Panel-style discussion
Day 3: Role of Media in Nepal-China Relations
- Presentation on Navigating Chinese Media for Nepali Audiences
- Presentation by Ramila Gautam on Chinese media in Nepal and its market among Chinese audiences in Nepal
- Panel-style discussion with a guest presenter and moderator
Day 4: Climate Change, China, and the Hindu Kush Himalayas
- Presentation by Dr Yi Shaoliang on Climate Change, China and the Hindu Kush Himalayas
- Impacts of climate change on fragile ecosystems, glaciers, and local communities in the Hindu Kush Himalayas
- China's policies and initiatives to address climate change
- Technological advancements for climate mitigation in the region
- Collaborative efforts between China and neighbouring countries, including Nepal, for sustainable development
- Strategies for promoting regional climate resilience and stability
Day 5: Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) in Chinese Companies
- Governance structures in Chinese companies
- Dynamics of cross-cultural workplaces
- Environmental goals and initiatives of Chinese enterprises
- Screening of the documentary "American Factory"
- Discussion on the challenges and cultural clashes depicted in the documentary

We have an illustrious lineup of guest speakers, including Dr. Rupesh Regmi, CEO and Co-founder of WiseAdmit; Ramila Gautam, Deputy Director of South Asia Network TV; and Dr Yi Shaoliang, Intervention Manager at ICIMOD, who will share their unique insights on global innovation, media dynamics, and climate change within the context of Chinese influence.
China Week
The instructors are the co-founders of the Araniko Project, an initiative that uncovers the history of Nepal-China relations using primary source references, mostly in the Chinese language.
